Australia’s online classifieds advertising market experienced strong growth in 2011 with expenditure increasing by 22% over the previous year, taking the market to a total value of $617 million. This compares with growth of just three percent in 2010 and marks the first time the industry has returned to its pre-global financial crisis annual growth rates of 20+ percent. The study into online classifieds performance in 2011 estimates that online now accounts for 35% of all classifieds advertising expenditure in Australia (excluding print directories). Expenditure on print classifieds in all three markets remains in long-term decline, driven not just by this switch to online classifieds but also by the emergence of alternatives such as auction sites and free listings sites. In Australia, it is estimated that this has led to a decline in print classifieds expenditure of approximately 35% since 2007. Last year’s increase in online expenditure was experienced across the three key classifieds sectors of automotive, real estate and employment. Approximately 60% of advertisers raised their online budgets as part of an overall increase in advertising expenditure; while 30% of advertisers reported increasing their online spend at the expense of print media budgets. Automotive classifieds revenues grew by 24% in 2011, reaching a total value of $189 million. Demand was stimulated by a more buoyant new car market which in turn stimulated second hand car sales and greater use of online by private advertisers. Online is now estimated to account for 42% of automotive classifieds advertising, excluding manufacturer and dealer brand advertising.
